Resource Aware Design
Year: 2025
MASDFAB ETH: This project reinterprets Enzo Mari’s approach to design—accessible, open, and grounded in simple construction methods—through the lens of contemporary challenges in circular fabrication. Instead of working with standardized materials, the workflow incorporates 3D scanning and computational modeling to treat the irregular geometries of reclaimed slender timber as design parameters rather than defects. Algorithmically generated assemblies are refined by the designer and tested at furniture scale using CNC, robotic milling, and manual processes. By combining Mari’s ethos of democratized making with a reproducible digital method for reclaimed materials, the project proposes a scalable strategy for resource-aware design and adaptive manufacturing.
