Brick Depositions

Year: 2024

MASDFAB ETH: This project explores the creative interplay between robotics, computational design, and the physics of material behavior to construct a visually captivating brick wall. Using a UR robotic arm interfaced with COMPAS, Rhino, and Grasshopper, we developed a process for depositing bricks in a manner that leverages the natural dynamics of their fall. The design challenge was to create a wall that appears unstable and chaotic, yet remains structurally sound. By carefully calibrating the robotic arm's placement and release of each brick, we introduced controlled randomness into the arrangement. This method allowed the bricks to land and settle in unpredictable but stable configurations, creating an architectural expression of balance between order and disorder.
